The Story of Spinning
Seed Savers Exchange member Junior Gordon of Hickman County, Tennessee shared this variety with us. Years ago children would carry these gourds to school in their pockets and take them out to spin on their desks.
This variety is also known as "Dancing" gourd.
Gourds were brought to Europe and the Americas as early as 11,000 BCE and to Asia by 6,000 BCE. Gourds were domesticated in both Africa and Asia independently.
Many cultures have used gourds to create tools, toys, bird houses, and musical instruments as well objects of art.
