Winner of our 2015 beet evaluation for taste. White- and yellow-ringed roots measure 4-6½" long and vary in shape. While mangel and fodder beets are larger than typical beets and were traditionally used for animal feed, you’ll find the sweet, juicy, and smooth-textured roots are prime for the dinner table and not just the barnyard. Seed Savers Exchange’s seed stock was originally acquired from Dr. Alan Kapuler of Peace Seeds in the 1980s.

Growing Instructions
Instructions - Sow seeds outdoors as soon as soil can be worked in spring. Seeds will germinate in 5-10 days. Beets can be planted at two-week intervals for continuous harvests. All parts of the beet plant are edible.

Grows Well, Produces Mild Beets

I grew these in Cincinnati (zone 6b). After direct sowing in late April, the greens took off right away. They were harvested throughout August without bolting, as it is a biennial vegetable. Their flavor is mild, not very "beety" and I think best consumed roasted with skin. When cooked in stews, they lose their color entirely and end up looking like potatoes. The greens were enjoyed as well, sauteed with oil and spices.

I purchased Yellow Mangel seed from SSE and grew them during the 2021 season. The season was one of our driest on record in Minnesota. I'm assuming it was because of the dry conditions that these beets were...bitter. I would like to try growing them again for a few reasons: 1) The greens/tops were very good. 2) Even in the dry conditions the beets grew to be larger than my hand. 3) They kept for longer than a red beet after being picked before turning soft.
