John Withee purchased this historic variety from the R.H. Shumway’s Seed Company in the early 1970s. R.H. Shumway’s first offered a bean by the name ‘Dwarf Kentucky Wonder’ or ‘Commodore’ in 1940. This variety was an All-America Selections winner in 1938. All-America Selections was founded by W. Ray Hastings in the 1930s in an attempt to inform home gardeners of new varieties that have truly been improved. This was accomplished through a network of trial ground throughout North American climates where these varieties were grown and assessed by expert, impartial judges. Only varieties that were new and not previously available commercially were accepted into these trials. ‘Dwarf Kentucky Wonder’ has been a consistent commercial offering in the seed trade since 1938.
