Item Details

This type of Asian melon, or conomon, has been grown in China and Japan for thousands of years but has only recently appeared in American markets. Golden-yellow softball-sized fruits. Flesh is fun to eat, very sweet and crisp.

  • 85-95 days
  • ±2,900 seeds/oz
  • Conventional
  • Fruits grow to the size of a softball
  • Juicy, pale green flesh
  • Can be grown on a trellis easily

This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating
  • Pickling

Melons are traditionally eaten raw or fresh. Top a slice of melon with a dash of salt and serve with any meal or on its own!

Melon pairs nicely with both sweet and savory flavors so you can combine it with other fruits in a salad or toss with mint, feta, and cured pork or bacon.

Pickled melons are a rare treat. Make sure to use cider vinegar and fresh ginger with melons that are firm when you plan for your pickled melons.

Instructions - Melons love heat. Sow seeds outdoors in 12" diameter hills after danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Space hills 6' apart in all directions. Seeds will germinate in 4-10 days. Can also be started indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost.

  • Direct Seed: 1" Deep
  • Seeds to Hill: 6-8 Seeds

Very small sweet melon, tolerated adverse conditions

by

Zone 6-These grew well in a dry summer when other melons in the same patch didn't produce much, and had lots of little melons with a nice sweet flavor. Sweeter than the usual Japanese "conomon" melons. Be aware that they are very small, tennis ball size for me.
