This variety of Cosmos is native to Mexico and Central and South America. As such, it can tolerate growing with very little water after the seeds germinate. It was introduced into English horticulture in the late 18th century. Diablo Cosmos is of the species Cosmos sulphureus. This species of flower was preferred by the Korean-Japanese botanist and plant breeder Dr. Woo Jang-choon in his program of planting cosmos flowers along the highways and railroads in Japan and Korea. In 1974 Diablo Cosmos won the All-America Selections award for Flowers.

Growing Instructions
Instructions - You can sow the seeds for Diablo Cosmos directly into your garden soil after the last frost. Sow them 1/8 of an inch deep and they will germinate in 3-10 days. These plants prefer full sun to partial shade and need very little attention. As the plants grow, thin them to 18-36 inches apart and they may require staking to keep them upright.

I have been trying to start these indoors for a month now. After waiting 2 weeks for the first seeds to germinate and getting zero, I reseeded. It's been another two weeks, so far I have a grand total of one tiny plant. Very disappointing. The other variety of cosmos I seeded four weeks ago is almost ready for transplant. This variety is just not growing at all. Both varieties planted under identical conditions.

I’ve grown these for the last five years and have had no problem with germination. The flowers are beautiful with the red-orange color and lacy foliage.

I planted these seeds outdoors and they have done amazing with very little effort or maintenance! About three feet high, a little unwieldy, but continuous blooms. The bees and butterflies love them. One of the few non-native plants I grow in my yard! (Northwest Ohio)

This seed started very easily and has given the best stand of orange I’ve ever seen in a garden. Very very pleased with this sturdy, gorgeous flower.

I too tried to start these seeds indoors with little success, about 10% germination. I then planted some outside and had almost all the seeds germinate. my conclusion is the warmer the soil the better the germination and seeing that they are native to a warm climate this make sense. there ability to flower for a long time is also a big plus.
