This faintly sweet, buttery-tasting heirloom collard produces modest heads and light-green to yellow-green edible leaves that are elliptical, lobed, and slightly dangling. Plants measure 17-23" tall by 32-43" wide. It hails from Snow Hill, North Carolina, where Nancy and James Jernigan grew it throughout their married life after receiving it from James’ father. Acquired by SSE from the USDA in 2016. 75-80 days.

Shared and Saved This variety hails from Snow Hill, North Carolina, where Nancy Jernigan and her late husband James grew it throughout their married life. It was originally given to them by James’ father, James A. Jernigan. In 2005, Nancy shared seeds of this variety with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA embarked on a collard seed search in the Carolinas because they recognized that this seed-saving tradition was in decline. Researchers drove many hundreds of miles and met several dozen home gardeners, like Nancy, who shared seeds of treasured, family heirloom varieties.

Seed Savers Exchange is honored to bring this variety out of our bank and into the hands of gardeners.
