This faintly sweet, buttery-tasting heirloom collard produces modest heads and light-green to yellow-green edible leaves that are elliptical, lobed, and slightly dangling. Plants measure 17-23" tall by 32-43" wide. It hails from Snow Hill, North Carolina, where Nancy and James Jernigan grew it throughout their married life after receiving it from James’ father. Acquired by SSE from the USDA in 2016. 75-80 days.
Shared and Saved This variety hails from Snow Hill, North Carolina, where Nancy Jernigan and her late husband James grew it throughout their married life. It was originally given to them by James's father, James A. Jernigan. In 2005, Nancy shared seeds of this variety with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA embarked on a collard seed search in the Carolinas because they recognized that this seed-saving tradition was in decline. Researchers drove many hundreds of miles and met several dozen home gardeners, like Nancy, who shared seeds of treasured, family heirloom varieties.

Sweet, tender, and perfect!

I come from eastern NC, and grew up on collards like these. Grew them in the fall/winter of 2020 in Asheville, NC. So tender they cook in half the time of other varieties. After a few frosts, they are so sweet you will swear there was sugar in the pot. Sauteed like kale, they are a winner. Survived several snows, temps in the teens, and I'm letting the last few heads bolt to save seed. Better than any kale or collard you've ever grown. Guaranteed.
