Beautiful yellow-green leaves, a mild taste, and a wide, thick edible white shank have long made this leek a popular variety in Europe. Described by the French seed house Vilmorin-Andrieux as early as 1856, this rare historic variety was acquired by Seed Savers Exchange member William Woys Weaver of Pennsylvania while traveling in Alsace, France. 100-120 days. This historic variety dates to at least 1856 in France where it was described by the legendary Vilmorin-Andrieux seed house in Description des Plantes Potagères. American horticulturist Fearing Burr, Jr. also recommended this variety in 1863. Today it remains popular in Europe, but it is largely unknown in the U.S. Food historian and Seed Savers Exchange member William Woys Weaver, helped introduce this rare leek into the Exchange after purchasing seeds while traveling in Alsace, France. Our seed stock is from Illinois member Liz Hooton. Seed Savers Exchange is honored to bring this variety out of our bank and into the hands of gardeners.
