Item Details
Green orach, best harvested when between 6" and 2' tall. Self-sows in the garden.
This variety comes from Mark Walker and Kathy Kapitan, seed savers who have listed in the SSE Yearbook Exchange since 1996. They received this orach from Marks uncle, Gib Backlund, who obtained it from his father-in-law, George Bly. George's parents, Haldor and Ingeliv (Sekse) Bly, brought the orach to the U.S. when they emigrated from Norway to Minnesota in 1888.

Wow! Fast germination!
by Karen
Quite impressed with the germination! Sprouted in 3 days, sown in flats receiving morning sun with daytime temps 68-72 day and mid 50s at night, kept moist with gentle spray.
Looking forward to my first taste of Orach!
Failure, too delicate
by Ebonweaver
It only has about a 40% germination rate, and if the temperature hits 90, which it does even here in New England, it dies. I don't know where you're supposed to grow this where the temp is 60-80 for 3 months straight. I only used a few seeds for a test planting so I'll try again but so far this is literally a total loss. Spinach, radishes, koji, etc planted at the same time is all doing just fine.
It’s a winner!

Easy to grow, pests didn’t bother it, and no maintenance required this summer in mid-Atlantic region. It’s a nice addition to salads and smoothies. Will plant it again next year in succession plantings.
