This weekend is always full of great workshops and speeches, tours, a seed swap, barn dance, conversation, local food, and fun! The keynote speaker for 2008 is Lynne Rossetto Kasper, of NPR's The Splendid Table. All are welcome to attend, there's something for everyone!

We have had a tremendous season for garlic at Heritage Farm. We should harvest our full crop by August 1, then cure for a 2-3 week period, clean and prepare for shipments that begin in September. All orders are shipped with detailed planting instructions, so please do not be intimidated if this is your first time!

The SSE Collection contains over 1100 different accessions of lettuce (Lactuca sativa). This year we are regenerating 50 varieties from our collection including: leaf, butterhead, crisphead and romaine (cos) type lettuces, with leaves displaying various morphologies and colors ranging from yellow-green to blue-green to red. A lettuce seed crop takes up relatively little space and multiple varieties can be saved with minimal isolation distance.

Seed Savers recently received funding from the 1772 Foundation to construct another greenhouse at Heritage Farm to support the efforts of preserving its seed collection of over 25,000 varieties of vegetables. At Heritage Farm we rely on greenhouse space to both produce seed and start transplants for some of the most endangered heirloom vegetables.
