(Phaseolus vulgaris) One of the 1,186 beans given to SSE in 1981 by John Withee and his
Wanigan Associates. (Wanigan is the Abnaki Indian word for the
cookshacks on rafts which floated down Maine rivers during the spring
lumber drives, where huge quantities of beans were cooked and served
to Maine woodsmen.) Given to John by Mr. Taylor in Maine. Use like
any dry kidney bean, excellent flavor. Pole habit, 95 days.
