Seed donor Kelly Yeaton acquired this variety from Nestor Keene who in turn acquired it in 1937 from his aunt, Mae Smith. Nestor opened a barber shop in Boalsburg, PA in the early 1950s and kept a jar of ‘Aunt Mae's Bibb’ seed by the cash register, available for free to customers. When Nestor retired in the 1980s, his son Robert took over the family barber shop and continued to offer his family’s lettuce to his customers. The Keenes favored this lettuce variety above all others for its excellent flavor and crispness and they found it to be exceptionally hardy.
