Grape Collection

In addition to apples, 360 grape varieties are
maintained in the orchard. These varieties were graciously donated to Seed Savers Exchange by the late Elmer Swenson, accomplished grape breeder from Osceola, Wisconsin. Swenson dedicated his life to breeding hardy grape varieties for the Upper Midwest, carrying on his grandfather’s passion for viticulture in his small Wisconsin vineyard. By crossing wild varieties with lines bred at the University of Minnesota, Swenson developed some of the most popular hardy grape varieties available today, including Edelweiss and Swenson Red.
