Item Details

Bred at the University of New Hampshire by the late Professor Elwyn Meader. Introduced by the Billy Hepler Seed Company in 1957. Distinctive purple foliage and purple flowers. Bright purple, stringless, slightly curved 5" pods turn green when cooked. Germinates well even in cold wet soil.

The vibrant hue of these purple beans turns to a light green when steamed or blanched. Try to eat them fresh as often as possible.


These beans pair nicely with quinoa, almonds, bacon, parsley and eggplant. Use these beans to make spicy refrigerator pickles and garnish a cocktail with them!

Growing Instructions

Instructions - Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed and soil and air temperatures have warmed. Harvest frequently for increased yields.

Good bean for rainy climates

One of the best for coastal areas. Grows right through a cold, rainy June without missing a beat, and can keep producing into the autumn so long as it doesn't freeze.

I love these beans! They were so easy to grow and produced so many! Purple beans are a lot easier to find on the bush than green, and that alone made them amazing. But the flavor is great too, and they can and cook well.
