Item Details

This watermelon came to Seed Savers Exchange from Virdie Smith of Gladwater, Texas. The highly productive plants bear many medium sized fruits with striped rinds and a high sugar content. It is possible that the watermelon originated in Africa and that it was cultivated in the Nile Valley as early as the 2nd millennium BCE and is mentioned in the Bible. Later the watermelon was brought to India and China before being brought to Europe. It was brought to North America by European colonists and African slaves.

This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating

Nothing compares to the experience of eating fresh watermelon slices on a warm summer day. Watermelon flesh can also be used for cold soups with citrus or in salads with arugula and feta cheese. To make a refreshing watermelon granita, or frozen ice, blend 4 cups of watermelon flesh that has been cubed and seeded with 1/4 cup of sugar and juice from half of a lime. Pour the mixture into a shallow dish and freeze for 1-3 hours. You can then scrape the ice with a fork and serve with mint or basil.

Growing Instructions

Instructions - Watermelon seeds can be sown directly into the ground or planted indoors in soil trays or pots 4 weeks before planting them outside. This is a heat loving plant, so make sure that all chance of frost has passed and the soil has warmed before planting them outdoors. Watermelon seeds germinate in 4-10 days and can be planted outdoors in hills that are 12 inches across and 8 feet apart. Sow 6-8 seeds per hill at around 1/2 inch deep and thin the hill to 3-4 plants as the vines grow. If you are transplanting your watermelon, plant them in rows that allow ample room for vines to spread. This variety should be mature in 90 days. 25 seeds per packet.

  • Direct Seed: 1/2" Deep
  • Seeds to Hill: 6-8 Seeds
  • Thin: To 3-4 Plants

Best watermelon I have ever grown

by

Been gardening for 50 years and planted this first time in 2019. Best ever in all respects. Shame it has been out of stock for now for 2 years. Can't find it anywhere else. :(
However Ijust found 7 leftover seeds this year and am thrilled!

The perfect watermelon

by

I am so happy this is finally back in stock! Best watermelon ever! Not so big and not so small. I been out of the seeds for past 2 years. Thank you for bringing it back! Sweetest and easiest to grow ever!

Sweet and complex flavor. Must grow!

by

We have grown this watermelon 2 years in a row in region 9. It’s simply amazing. Beautiful striped fruit that is typically 8 pounds but we just harvested a giant over 15! Many watermelons are sweet. This is a perfect sweet. The first bite gives you the sugar you want but then the flavor that follows is complex, fruity, and brite. If you buy a watermelon from the store it has one flavor. I’ve never tasted a watermelon with this level of depth. Hands down the harvest we can’t wait for every year. A must grow!
