This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating
  • Roasting
  • Salsa

This pepper is: SWEET

Bell peppers are sweetest when they mature to a full red, but the crunchy green flesh is a great addition to many savory dishes. You can stuff peppers with quinoa, rice, or a mixture of cheese and beans and bake or cook rings of pepper in a skillet with a fresh egg inside.

Roast your red peppers over a burner or under a broiler, then peel and puree with hummus or slice and add to grilled eggplant and mozzarella sandwiches with fresh basil.

Growing Instructions

Instructions - Sow seeds indoors ¼” deep. Peppers germinate best in warm soil, so gentle bottom heat may be helpful until seedlings emerge. Wait to transplant outdoors until soil is warm.

  • Start Indoors: 8 weeks before last frost
  • Germination: 14 Days
  • Plant Outdoors: 12-24” Apart
  • Light: Full Sun

Expected to grow/share SWEET peppers. Late snows delayed planting, but having raised, transplanted, and given away many robust seedlings, I picked our first ripe red pepper last night. Hubby required first aid after cutting the pepper, when the juice or a seed burned his eye. Later, the mixed homegrown veg' tray we grilled with the pepper was too hot for either of to eat! Extremely surprised and disappointed with what I can only assume were mispackaged seeds! PLEASE be careful if you've planted and haven't yet tried this year's crop in case ours weren't the only scorchingly hot seeds masquerading as "sweet" King of the North.

More of a Pauper than a King

by

Good taste but very slow growing. It's the end of August and I still haven't harvested one that was completely red. Plants are loaded with very small peppers. A little disappointing.

Great flavor, Beautiful Pepper

by

I have been growing King of the North peppers for 4 or 5 years now. I love the sweet flavor and excellent texture. At least in my garden, they are a bit slower to grow and ripen than some of my other peppers, but the flavor is worth it.

Great flavor and highly productive

by

I planted these peppers for the first time from seed this spring. I found them to germinate extremely well and took about as long as most sweet peppers to germinate. The flavor was very good and I noticed that the pepper seemed a little thicker than most green peppers I've grown. The peppers that I got were picture perfect and almost looked fake. I ate them green and red. The red color came on about the same rate as most green pepper which is slow. I ate peppers all summer and then at the first frost I picked everything and froze a ton of quart bags. I planted 6 plants this summer and will consider planting more in 2021.

DISAPPOINTED

by

DISAPPOINTED. PEPPERS ARE SMALL. MANY ARE ROTTING BEFORE THEY TURN RED. MID AUGUST AND I PLANTED INDOORS IN FEBRUARY SO I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN SEVERAL LARGE ONES BY NOW. VERY MISHAPEN FRUIT. WILL NOT GET THESE AGAIN.

Seed Savers Response: I'm sorry to hear that your plants are not producing as expected. We guarantee our seeds to germinate and grow true to type. Please reach out to our customer service team to discuss possible environmental impacts to your plants' growth and to be sent a replacement for this seed.

Heavy Producer, Wonderful Taste

by

Wonderful bell pepper that is a heavy producer. We grow them every year in the greenhouse and they produce more than we can eat with only a few plants. They are great to pick and eat when they are green. Or you wait a bit longer and let them turn red on the vine which makes them even sweeter. I would highly recommend this variety.

Best Sweet Bell Pepper

by

Our go to sweet bell pepper for our heirloom nursery. Our customers love this variety because it is a guarantee for large bell - green early, and red later. Also holds well on the plant. We have been selling this variety for over 15 years. We also use this pepper in our restaurant at our small scale brewery. Guests always ask where did we get that amazing sweet pepper! We are happy to tell them Seed Saver Exchange.

Best sweet bell pepper I've ever grown!

by

I live in Salt Lake and have been growing red peppers for the past 10 years and while there has been success, nothing I've tried has come close to the sweet taste and excellent productivity (10 peppers on a plant!) of the King of the North. I planted them in a spot worthy of any diva pepper (that is what they are, after all), with more sun in the spring and less in the fall (i.e., protected from full sun when it's over 100 deg), then got busy with the rest of the garden and ignored them until the discovery! I decided to try these because the other sweet bell peppers I've tried never seemed to have time to finish. I saw the meh kinds of reviews below and had to leave this great experience.

Great pepper variety

by

Wonderful pepper. We live in far northern Wisconsin and have had great success with these. Sweet and large. In a warm season, nearly all of them turned red - highly recommended

The best pepper ever for my northeastern garden

by

These are literally the only bell peppers (or pretty much any pepper) that I have been able to grow in my garden in Massachusetts. I don’t try any other variety anymore. These peppers are so dependable!
